According to reports in Ukra News the stand-off between Ukraine president Viktor Yuschenko and the opposition political party over the immediate closure of all gambling venues located in residential areas has ended in defeat for the president, who had earlier exercised his right of veto after the Verkhovna Rada voted for the new law on May 15 following a fatal fire in a gaming house.
President Yuschenko, under pressure from commercial gambling companies threatening job losses, had vetoed the new law on June 4, saying that although he agreed with the concept it was an issue that needed further study due to its far-reaching implications and could not be immediately implemented without serious constitutional consequences .
The opposition threatened to override the president’s veto on June 11, and this week a presidential spokesman announced that the president had signed the bill into law
