Slow take-off for Ryanair in-flight gambling

News on 26 Jun 2009

Think back to 2005, when software providers and operators alike were intrigued by statements from the Irish budget airline Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary that it planned to introduce a passenger service with a difference – in-flight gambling.
Although the service never seemed to materialise, the possibility of it being implemented continued to surface from time to time, and four years along the Wall Street Journal reported this week that it is on the program at Ryanair once again.
Quoting a Ryanair spokesperson, the WSJ said that Ryanair’s in-flight gambling system was still in the development and research phase, but that it was hoped to launch the service within the next three to five years.  The report did not indicate whether the technology was being outsourced or developed in-house.
