Jersey license costs to go up

For some months now the unofficial news has been that the island of Jersey – off the French coast in the Channel Isles – has ambitions to become an Internet gambling licensing jurisdiction. The cost of land licensing will therefore be of interest as an indicator of what the cost is likely to be….and it is going up.
The BBC reported this week that land betting shops in Jersey could see a four-fold increase in the cost of gambling licences.
Alan Maclean, Minister for Economic Development, has proposed the increase after finding that the cost of licences has remained the same since 2001. The annual fee is currently GBP 1 290, but this could increase to GBP 5 000 from next (2010) year if the proposal is accepted.
Betting shops and all other amusement and entertainment facilities on the island must have a licence to operate, and such a rise would effect 29 betting offices in Jersey.
Permits to run bingo events and lotteries could also increase under the plans.
