News on 11 Oct 2009

Chinese lottery authorities report that a new record has been set for lottery wins in the country, according to the newspaper China Daily.
The win – for 359.9 million yuan (around $52.7 million) was achieved by an unidentified punter in Anyang in the province of Henan, who spent just 176 yuan to buy 88 lottery tickets. His win is the biggest since records were kept on the Chinese mainland 22 years ago, and eclipses the 113 million yuan achieved by a player from the Gansu province in 2007.
Lottery tickets are sold on the Chinese mainland to raise money for government welfare services or sports development. Winners are required to collect their windfalls within two months and pay 20 percent as tax.
About 84.6 billion yuan worth of lottery tickets were sold in the country from January to August this year, a year-on-year rise of 22.4 percent.
