With 66 congressional co-sponsors on board for his HR2267 Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act, Congressman Barney Frank may be about to make his next move in seeking to legalise online gambling in the United States, reports CardPlayer.
The publication interviewed Poker Players Alliance executive director John Pappas this week, who said he was optimistic about the prospects for the bill and expected it to move to mark-up before spring this year.
The bill has been in the House Financial Services Committee chaired by Frank since May 6 2009, although a non-voting hearing was conducted on December 3 2009. Pappas says the most likely progress will be a congressional mark-up, where the bill is read aloud and members of the corresponding committee can voice their concerns and edits.
This now appears to be likely, with Pappas saying that it could come as early as this (March) month if not spring 2009.
Pappas discussed what the PPA has been doing in recent months in preparation for a committee vote, the importance of getting Democrat leader Harry Reid’s support for online poker, and a host of other issues.
