The Malaysian authorities have joined those in Indonesia in threatening to monitor Internet betting on the run-up to the World Cup football championships in South Africa mid-year.
Police spokesman Asst Comm Zainuddin Yaakob said a special task force has been set up to monitor syndicates offering online gambling.
“We will be raiding outlets offering online betting and such raids will be conducted regularly,’’ he said, adding that the public should not place bets with such syndicates.
Yaakob said Malaysian police have, so far, seized a total of 1 702 modified computers used for online gambling in ongoing enforcement operations. He said 32 people aged between 23 and 60 have been arrested in 90 raids on illegal gambling premises, and that electricity supplies to raided premises could be discontinued to discourage further illegal activity.
“We are investigating those detained under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953 and the convicted offender could be jailed for a period of five years or fined a maximum of RM100 000 for every gambling machine seized,” he said.
“The order is out to begin our crackdown against these gambling syndicates and we ill use all available laws to prosecute offenders including preventive laws,” he added.
