3,771 arrested in Malaysia for illegal World Cup betting

With the World Cup still at its most exciting stage in the semi-finals, betting in Malaysia has reached unprecedented levels despite the major police operation launched early in June.

Over the weekend the national police issued figures from June 9 to date on arrests for illegal gambling – much of it online – reporting that 3,771 arrests have so far been made, 236 of them unofficial “bookies” who facilitated online wagering for local punters.

In the course of many police raids large numbers of computers have been seized and substantial sums of money confiscated.

National Police deputy chief General Aek Angsananon revealed in a press conference that police had asked for the Information and Communication Technology Ministry to block 1,791 gambling websites. So far 1,227 websites have been blocked while the ministry is in the process of trying to block 564 more, he said.
