British media are covering the remarkable story of one Brit who is currently blessing the freezing weather in the UK, which obliged him to look further afield for football action.
Bookmaking firm Paddy Power revealed this week that the London-based sports gambler turned a GBP 40 weekend accumulator bet into a GBP 117 000 windfall betting on a variety of European fixtures after the inclement weather in the UK cancelled several key matches.
He saw all 14 of his bets come home to record a remarkable return on investment by any standards.
A Paddy Power representative said: “What a great win – I’m not sure anyone has profited from the country’s Big Freeze in quite so spectacular a style although the celebrations could literally be on ice as he’s not even telling his wife!”
The anonymous punter said: “I wouldn’t normally pick so many European fixtures in my weekend accumulator but what with the weather there was no real alternative. I didn’t really think it stood a snowball’s chance of coming home as my knowledge of European football isn’t brilliant but now I must be the happiest person in Britain with all the chaos the snow has caused. Without it I may not have won.”
