Online gambling to pay Irish tax?

International online gambling sites could be forced to pay tax on Irish bets if the official Opposition in the Irish parliament has its way, it was revealed Thursday.
According to the UK Press Association, Irish Labour Party spokesmen said offshore bookmakers – including telephone and television operators – would be brought under a new 1.5 percent levy for the industry in its proposals to extend taxation. This would replace the existing 1 percent tax in betting shops and raise Euro 90 million for the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund, the spokesmen claimed.
Mary Upton, Labour’s sports spokeswoman, said operators refusing the pay the levies would be banned in Ireland.
The Irish move follows recent initiatives by the British government to extend “secondary licensing” and taxation to offshore Internet betting companies providing online gambling facilities to UK residents .
