Swedish fraudsters masquerading as tax officials are the latest threat to online gamblers in the Scandinavian country, several websites reported this week.
The scam artists risk very serious criminal punishments that could include prison terms if they are caught, as impersonating the Skatteverket, or Swedish IRS, is unlikely to be viewed leniently by the authorities.
The reports suggest that online attempts are being made to delude gamblers into offering up their bank details and other important personal security information to the bogus tax officials. The sophisticated scam was uncovered and reported to the police by a gambler who had been taken in by the fraud after receiving material that appeared to originate from the Skatteverket.
