Saviour Balzan, the outspoken editor of the Malta Today newspaper, survived a long-running legal debate with the local law this week, getting a minimal Euro 7 000 slap on the wrist for publishing a land casino advertorial back in 2005.
Balzan was first taken to a lower court and acquitted on grounds that the laws invoked did not adequately define the nature of an advertorial advertisement, but the case was then taken before the Malta Appeals Court.
There, Judge Giannino Caruana Demajo found culpability in the running of an editorial on the Dragonara Casino Brasserie and Bar….but imposed only a light penalty.
