Aberdeen FC director gets off lightly on betting charges

News on 29 Dec 2017

Duncan Skinner, a non-executive director of Aberdeen FC, has been fined a total of GBP 1,000 after admitting to two charges of laying football bets in contravention of Scottish Football Association rules.

The fines were imposed at a disciplinary tribunal this week which considered Skinner’s bets in the 2014/15 and 2015/2016 seasons.

The tribunal may consider further sanctions in respect of bets placed in seasons 2016/17 and 2017/18 when it again convenes in March 2018.

Our readers will recall from previous bulletins that Skinner was a prolific gambler despite rules against such activity by any member of the SFA, placing 589 bets over 1,485 games with 81 involving the club of which he was a non-executive director…in one case he bet against his own club.

Skinner, who is also on the board of Sportscotland, has until 3 January 2018 to respond to the alleged breach of Rule 31, which states: “No club, official, team official or other member of team staff, player, match official or other person under the jurisdiction of the Scottish FA shall gamble in any way on a football match.”

In a statement, the club said: “We note and accept the outcome of the SFA disciplinary panel with regards to Duncan Skinner and will continue to work with the SFA to ensure all associated with Aberdeen FC adhere to all governing body rules, regulations and procedures.”

Earlier this year, the Annan Athletic chairman Henry McClelland was fined GBP 3,000 for placing 4,011 football bets, including 430 involving his own club.
