Adelson sounds off against daily fantasy sports

News on 9 Sep 2016

In a follow up to an earlier Yahoo interview discussing his plan to build a new $1.9 billion football stadium and bring the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas (see previous  report), land gambling mogul Sheldon Adelson left no room for doubt on his antipathy to daily fantasy sports, which appears to be as strong as his opposition to online gambling.

In a rather long diatribe against the vertical, Adelson gave the reasons for his opposition as the alleged exploitation of the poor, the ease of accessibility, the dangers to minors and the potential for addiction, and his opinion that DFS is immoral and gambling…in fact many of the same reasons he has cited for his aversion to online gambling.

“I know what’s gambling and I know what’s not gambling. And fantasy sports is gambling. I’m very much against it,” he says, noting that his empire is making money and doesn’t need fantasy sports.

“The biggest victims of Internet gambling, and these fantasy sports that people can access from their cellphones, are children, college students of age, and poor and middle class people. I’m not against it just because it hurts children, it hurts a lot of groups. I don’t want to make money that way. I don’t want to make money taking from poor people. They don’t have anything to gamble. And when they do, they get in over their heads,” Adelson claims.
