Anti-online gambling attorney general could be Nevada’s next governor

News on 19 Mar 2018

Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt, a Republican who has made no secret of his antipathy to online gambling in the past, is one of three Nevada candidates for election to governor following the closure of nominations late last week.

Our readers may recall that Laxalt has been outspoken in his criticism of online gambling, and was one of 10 state AGs who in 2016 signed a letter to President Donald Trump’s transition team urging the new administration to revisit the Department of Justice’s 2011 opinion on the federal Wire Act.

He has also reportedly been the recipient of election funding from vehement anti-online gambling Nevada casino mogul Sheldon Adelson.

Media reports from Nevada suggest that Laxalt is the frontrunner in the race for the state governorship as pro-online gambling governor Brian Sandoval, who is term-limited, stands down.

Laxalt’s rivals for the governorship are fellow Republican Dan Schwartz, who is currently the State Treasurer. The publication New Jersey.com reports that he is considered a bit of a maverick compared to other GOP lawmakers, with views on both sides of the political spectrum.

The third nomination is the Democratic Party’s Steve Sisolak, who appears neutral on online gambling, and reportedly does not seem to regard it as an issue worthy of inclusion in his campaign thus far.
