Antigua and the USA in WTO talks… again

Antigua and Barbuda prime minister Baldwin Spencer made all the right amicable noises in welcoming a new US ambassador to the Caribbean this week, but took the opportunity to again raise the long-running World Trade Organisation dispute over internet gambling discrimination and the continued lack of a satisfactory solution despite pro-Antigua rulings by the WTO.

In talks with the new incumbent, Larry Palmer, both Spencer and his deputy Harold Lovell bent the ambassadorial ear whilst pledging Antigua and Barbuda’s continued desire to maintain good relations, The Antigua Observer newspaper reported.

Both ministers stressed the need for a mutually agreed settlement that could benefit both nations.

For his part Ambassador Palmer politely if diplomatically expressed a desire to see the matter conclude amicably and to provide support for initiatives designed to empower Antigua and Barbuda’s citizenry, especially young people.

And that, rather inconclusively, appears to have been that.
