Popular arcade games like Solitaire TriPeaks, Tetris, Scrabble and Pac-Man will feature in a new GSN-developed product titled Sparcade which is currently entering the Beta-testing phase, with players invited to help iron out any wrinkles in the offering.
Using the Sparcade app, players will compete in head-to- head competition for reward, either in cash or virtual awards. The app is being launched in iOS format but an Android version is on the way, and a full final version should be ready for the public by autumn, according to GSN exec Greg Canessa
Canessa revealed that the games included in Sparcade have been enhanced for online and mobile use as predominantly contests of skill overlaid with social gaming and time-restricted competitive elements, and that GSN is in the process of negotiating with other game owners for the rights to similarly work on their products for inclusion in the app.
The app, which Canessa believes represents a whole new business and monetisation model, includes facilities to ensure contestants are equally matched in skills to avoid more experienced participants taking advantage of newbies in the 3 to 5 minute contests. Participants are charged a low tournament entry fee from which prizes and rewards are drawn, along with a small “rake” by GSN.
