One of the most successful online poker operators in the French market, Winamax, is to venture into the highly competitive field of sports betting following approval of its plans by the French regulator ARJEL.
The operator has been awarded a five-year licence enabling it to offer fixed odds betting and pari-mutuel betting services through the Winamax.fr domain.
Wide awake industry observers noted earlier this year that the company had begun recruiting suitably experienced people for the enterprise, which is believed to be the brainchild of managing directors Alexandre Roos and Christophe Schaaming.
The introduction of sports betting may be an attempt to bolster flagging rewards from French online poker, which has manifested a persistent overall decline over the past two years, culminating in the latest Q1-2014 statistics, which showed a 10 percent y-o-y slide in GGR to Euro 65 million (see previous reports).
