A promoted tweet from Coral Interactive’s Twitter account was the focus of the UK Advertising Standards Authority this week.
The tweet said: “The easiest £40 you’ll make this week! Stake £5 on 5/4 Real Madrid to beat Man City and get paid out at 8/1”. An image below the text showed a woman holding a sign which stated “New Customer Offer MAN CITY V REAL MADRID REAL MADRID TO WIN 8/1”. A flag attached to the sign stated “WINNINGS PAID IN FREE BETS”.
The first issue from the complainant, which challenged whether the ad misleadingly implied that the bet was risk-free, was dismissed by the ASA who said Coral had adhered to the Code.
However, the second issue, in which the complainant claimed the ad did not make sufficiently clear that winnings would be paid in free bet tokens, was upheld.
The ASA said the use of language in the main body of the tweet coupled with the small size of the text in a flag within the attached image would likely lead consumers to believe winnings would be paid in cash”.
