The news Tuesday that Trump Entertainment Resorts has applied for bankruptcy regarding two of its Trump-branded Atlantic City casinos was hardly a surprise (see previous reports), but nevertheless sad.
From an online gambling industry perspective, the focus is on what happens to the two internet gambling partners of Trump Plaza, which is set to close next week, and Trump Taj Mahal, which may stagger on for another two or three months.
New Jersey online gambling regulations require that the primary licence is held by an Atlantic City casino operator….a dwindling breed, it appears.
The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement has already made clear that Betfair, which partnered Trump Plaza, will be given time to find another land casino partner, and it seems logical that Ultimate Gaming will be given similar leeway in its relationship with Trump Taj Mahal.
The sympathy of most will however lie with the Atlantic City employees thrown out of work by these and preceding casino failures this year, with the number now unemployed nearing 10,000
