The Canadian Crown corporation, Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC), is investigating alternative revenue streams with a research request on the viability of an interactive television wagering service in a bid to augment already declining revenues, reports a Winnipeg media publication.
The ALC operates lottery games in Atlantic Canada and is jointly-owned by the four Atlantic provincial governments: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Jennifer Lawlor, spokesperson for ALC commented: “It’s about us doing due diligence because of the emerging trend in the technology world. Computers and televisions are moving together and there’s different offerings with both.”
Amid psychologist concerns on the impact the immediate availability of interactive television wagering would have on problem gambling, a Newfoundland and Labrador Government spokesperson, Luke Joyce, stated that any new service would be reviewed closely before any purchase or contract was undertaken.
