Aussie anti-gambling bill tabled

A private member’s bill has been formally tabled by Australia’s anti-gambling independent politician Senator Nick Xenophon.
If passed by Parliament the bill would restrict a number of gambling activities in Australia and includes a ban on advertising of betting venues and online gambling sites during G-classified (General Audience) programmes, spot-betting and exotic bets according to a report in The Age.
The bill provides for harsh penalties for those involved in match-fixing, as agreed by state and federal sports ministers, and provides for a maximum 10-year sentence and hefty fines.
The bill will be referred to the committee on gambling reform and form part of an existing online gambling inquiry.
