In Australia the Green Party is currently campaigning for restrictions on gambling advertising, calling initially for a federal government controlled study of the impact that gambling ads have on children, problem gambling and the integrity of sport.
The proposal will likely be for a joint standing parliamentary committee on gambling to look at the advertising and promotion of gambling services in sport, reports The Age newspaper.
The Greens’ gambling spokesman, Senator Richard Di Natale, says the inquiry would look at venue and broadcast advertising; the role of sponsorship alongside traditional forms of advertising; and in-game promotion and the integration of gambling into commentary and coverage.
It could be the precursor of a crackdown on the level of betting advertising and sponsorship that is already under consideration by the Greens.
Di Natale said Tuesday that people from all walks of life were sick of the saturation of gambling advertising.
”This is an issue that affects everybody, people are sick of sitting down and watching a game of footy and being bombarded by gambling ads,” he claimed.
