A predominantly land gambling enquiry by a New South Wales provincial government Select Committee into the impact of gambling on the New South Wales public has added a suggestion regarding online gambling to its recommendations.
The committee wants the government to strengthen regulations designed to guard against problem gambling, particularly in the use of electronic gaming machines – better known colloquially in Australia as “pokies” – and makes 18 suggestions covering a range of issues from machine design and regional locations to jackpots and a review of maximum bet limits.
The sting in the tail of the recommendations references the federal Interactive Gambling Act 2001 and suggests that it be amended to stop Australian financial institutions from processing online gambling related transactions between Australians and offshore internet gambling operators.
