Australian Governor General Peter Cosgrove dashed any hope of a last minute reprieve for online casino and poker gambling in Australia Wednesday, signing the Royal Assent for the Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill of 2016, which effectively bans such activity.
Once the Royal Assent has been granted, the law comes into force within 28 days under Australian law.
Although there are channels for licensing online sports betting operations, there are at present none for online casino or poker activity.
The move illustrates that despite a recent parliamentary inquiry to listen to the views of online poker supporters (see previous reports) the politicians have pressed ahead. The report of the inquiry is only due for release September 21.
