British Olympic gymnast Sam Oldham and his team took down a bronze medal at London 2012, to the delight of his grandmother Linda Aldred, who had placed a GBP 5 bet at 200 to 1 with Betfred that he would win a medal.
However, her delight changed to dismay when Betfred refused to pay out on grounds that her bet was void because the medal was won in a team competition, not an individual event. In team wins each member of the team gets a medal.
The issue has attracted wide and not very positive press both at home and abroad for Betfred, and you have to ask whether denying a relatively low pay out on such a technicality was really the right decision.
