Chinese media following the police investigation into the promotion of gambling on the Baidu ecommerce and web services network (see previous report) claim that the police were called in by the Cyberspace Administration of China following user complaints regarding the late night promotion of gambling websites.
The company has explained in a statement that it had been misled by the gambling sites themselves which were using false documentation to place material on the network.
Apparently much of the fraudulent activity took place in April, when the accounts were opened on e.baidu.com, Baidu’s subordinate online marketing service.
Baidu also said it had already reported the issue to the police, and the collection of evidence for an investigation is underway.
