The Belgian tax inspectorate ( (l’Inspection spéciale des impôts) is demanding millions in Euro in unpaid gambling taxes from Belgian media on television gambling games which involved the use of text message voting or premium rate numbers.
The tax inspectorate has concluded that the chance-based games fall under Belgian gambling law and as such the operators are subject to gambling taxes despite already having paid value-added-tax.
Demanding tax payments going back to 2009 and 2010, in addition to imposing a fine five times the amount owed, the tax inspectorate would be expected to receive payments amounting to tens of millions of Euros.
