Belgian online casino StarCasino.be’s slogan ‘La Sensation de Gagner’ (The Sensation of Winning) certainly did not apply this week when the company’s promotional posters were pulled by public transport operator Stib following a barrage of feminist complaints on social media.
The cause of the furore was the promotion’s depiction of an attractive young woman scantily clad in nothing but banknotes, which local complainants characterised as sexist and inappropriate on a public transport system in this day and age.
Furiously back-peddling, Stib apologised for the misjudgement, which it blamed on the festive season impact on advertisement vetting, and suggested that those offended by the material could also lodge complaints with Belgium’s equivalent of the ASA – the Jury d’Ethique Publicitaire.
