BEM Operations Limited, a subsidiary of the French online gambling group Betclic Everest, is among the latest sports betting licences granted by the Polish Ministry of Finance.
The latest licensing list brings the number of online Polish sports betting operators to 10.
Presumably this will mean the erasure of Betclic and its companies from the domain blacklist of unlicensed but active operators which the Poles have been building for some months (see previous reports)
Whilst Poland licenses sports betting operators, there is no scope for online casino or other verticals, which remain the preserve of the state-run Totalizator Sportowy. Operators need robust business models and smart strategies to prosper, given the harsh taxation climate which taxes operators at 12 percent of turnover and has strict regulations.
Some international operators are holding fire on activity in Poland pending the outcome of cases before the European Union courts regarding the acceptability of the Polish regulations.
