After suffering a setback in litigation against a New South Wales levy on turnover, the Australian divisions of internet gambling groups Betfair and Sportsbet won the right to appeal Friday.
The two companies will continue to contest a decision that they pay 1.5 percent of turnover to racing authorities in NSW. Corporate bookmaker Sportsbet has argued the fee is discriminatory and protectionist for wagering giant Tabcorp.
Both Sportsbet and Betfair say they should pay a fee based on gross profit rather than turnover.
The High Court on Friday granted both firms leave to appeal the decision by the Federal Court late last year.
