Presently unknown Distributed Denial of Services attackers managed successfully to take offline the US-facing online betting site BetOnline last Friday as security firms warned on the growing sophistication and strength of the attackers.
BetOnlines official Twitter feed confirmed widespread player reports of the take-down, initially referring to the outage as “network issues” which were being addressed by IT; however it was clearly something more serious as the outage extended to 48 hours, irritating players across various fora.
On Monday after a weekend that must have been stressful to say the least, BetOnline management communicated via Sports Betting Review to advise that the outage was the result of an attempt by a third party to disrupt traffic and site access.
Security firms warned that DDoS assaults reached unprecedented levels in 2017, and the last week has seen the arrival of an even larger and more advanced DDoS system, that security experts are already studying in order to augment existing defence systems.
The new system is said to be capable of ‘memcaching’ through an innovative reflection and amplification system which can improve attack volume by a factor of 50,000.
The specialist online security company Akamai reported just days ago that it had encountered a 1.35 terabits per second (Tbps) attack against web-based hosting service Github, which was briefly taken offline before Akamai was able halt the attack in its tracks.
Shortly thereafter Arbor Networks fought off a 1.7 Tbps assault against an anonymous service provider client.
