The mystery over whether the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara, is to remain in post or go with other US Attorneys asked to resign by the Trump administration (see previous report) was resolved Saturday when Bharara tweeted that he had been fired after he failed to submit his resignation.
“I did not resign,” Bharara said. “Moments ago I was fired. Being the US Attorney in SDNY will forever be the greatest honor of my professional life.”
Bharara’s tweet came close to 24 hours after the U.S. Department of Justice asked 46 U.S. Attorneys to step down. He had earlier claimed that he had been asked to stay on by both then president elect Trump and US Attorney General nominee Jeff Sessions.
