With the soft launch of New Jersey online gambling just days away, the Associated Press news agency reports that geolocation technology necessary to ensure that gamblers are within state borders may have to shut some literally borderline cases out.
Geolocation providers told the news agency that they have had to set their digital fences slightly away from the edge of New Jersey’s borders in order to “err on the side of caution” and be certain of complying with the state’s regulatory requirements.
The result will be small no-play zones that gamblers will have to leave temporarily if they want to bet online.
The width of the zones will vary, and regulators told AP that a punter who is shut out of one casino’s site might be able to access another’s.
