Brazilian online gambling bill could pass this year

Speaking at the Brazil Gaming Congress this week, Brazilian lawmaker Herculano Passos predicted that despite the political and economic turmoil in his country progress was still being made on a major gambling reform bill that includes the regulation and licensing of online gambling.

Passos revealed to delegates that the final draft of SB 186/2014 should be available as soon as next week, and a vote could follow in June this year.

The publication Yogonet reported that the suspension on impeachment of Brazil president Dilma Rousseff should not be an impediment to the progress of the gambling reform bill, with Passos noting that interim president Michel Temer is in favour of gambling reform.

The overall gambling market in Brazil could be in excess of $6 billion, some experts have estimated, with online gambling contributing about $900 million.
