Californian sports betting fans will be disappointed to hear that a proposal to legalise intrastate sports betting after years of PASPA constraints was killed off Thursday when Sen. Rod Wright’s SB 1390 bill failed to make it out of the state legislature’s Senate Appropriations Committee.
It was the second failure for the bill, which last year survived the state Senate but was voted down by a House appropriations committee unhappy with the potential challenge to the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act which restricts sports betting to just four states..
In related news, New Jersey’s Third US Court of Appeals case against an earlier federal court ruling supporting the PASPA has been further delayed.
The Department of Justice and sports leagues fighting the appeal were not in a position to deliver their responses to an earlier New Jersey submission to the court Thursday, and an extension was granted to next Tuesday.
Oral hearing arguments are still scheduled for June 26.
