Charles Coppolani has been appointed President of the French gambling regulator Autorité de régulation des jeux en ligne (ARJEL) succeeding Jean -François Vilotte who announced his intention to step down late last year.

The authority said Coppolani combines an understanding of issues related to gambling and games of chance along with solid experience in public accounting and fiscal management.

Coppolani is a graduate of the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris and an alumnus of the Ecole Nationale d’ Administration.

He has served as head of economic and financial control at the Ministry of Economy and Finance since 2006 as well as President of l’Observatoire des jeux (ODJ) since its creation in 2011.

Previously, Coppolani has served in the legal service of the judicial treasury agency, now Department of Legal Affairs of the economic and financial ministries, since 1993.

During his tenure, ARJEL said Coppolani will work towards the most favourable balance between player protection and optimal economic conditions for operators and players.
