The telephone betting and customer services departments at William Hill plc in Gibraltar are about to be downsized as punters turn increasingly to internet and mobile channels in placing their bets, reports the Gibraltar Chronicle.
In addition, the company expects to outsource its customer services, resulting in job cuts.
Apparently 65 jobs are in danger, although this will be balanced somewhat by the creation of 25 new positions at the company premises, where 420 people are employed.
The Chronicle reports that the online gambling industry is a major employer in the self-ruling British Dependency, accounting for some two to three thousand jobs.
The largest of the online gambling companies in Gibraltar is said to be Victor Chandler, which pioneered the idea of basing itself in a tax-friendly haven like Gibraltar and currently employs some 450 people.
