Chinese media reports this week have quoted a report on eSports from internet giant Tencent which claims that the eSports sector in China grew to RMB 5 billion with a user base of 250 million in 2017, and that the vertical is expected to grow rapidly, with the market set to reach RMB 9.7 billion and 350 million users by 2020.
At that point the Chinese eSports market will comprise almost 60 percent of the global eSports market, the report claims, noting that eSports revenues in China rose 41 percent year-on-year in 2017 to reach the equivalent of US$ 104 million.
That compares with North American eSports in the same period, which generated revenues of US$ 258 million after a 45 percent y-o-y growth, and South Korea, which reported just US$49 million.
The Tencent report found that in demographic terms more than 20 percent of Chinese eSports users were females and parents, with around 24.3 percent of overall eSports users female.
