September lottery figures released this week by the Chinese Ministry of Finance indicate that the vertical is showing no signs of slowing down, with combined sales up 13.3 percent year-on-year at RMB 41.8 billion (US$ 6 billion).
Sports lottery sales showed the most growth at 24.3 percent and RMB 24 billion, compared with 1.2 percent growth in Welfare lottery sales to RMB17.8 billion.
The Ministry also posted YTD numbers, reporting that overall combined lottery sales reached RMB 383.5 billion by end-September – a 23.4 percent rise year-on-year. Welfare sales contributed RMB 165.3 billion (a 4.2 percent y-o-y growth) whilst sports lottery sales delivered a 43.4 percent increase to RMB 218.2 billion.
The numbers are an indicator of the potential of this vertical if the four-year “suspension” on online sales imposed by the government were to be lifted.
