Regional media reports over the weekend indicate that the Chinese police have busted another major online gambling ring taking bets on the World Cup football.
Beijing police reportedly launched a major 200-officer strong series of raids to break up the ring, which allegedly generated around 320 million yuan (US$48 million), arresting 46 suspects.
Police spokesmen said Saturday that the raids are part of Operation Chain Break, a nationwide police initiative aimed at eliminating illegal gambling.
Fourteen of the suspects have been placed in criminal detention and 21 in administrative custody whilst investigations continue. Police believe that six masterminds were middlemen for foreign gambling websites, recruiting agents and customers.
The ring is thought to have used popular messaging sites such as WeChat to advertise the odds available for each day’s matches. The raids are the latest in a string of online gambling ring shutterings; last week police in the southern city of Shenzhen arrested nine people, while another 11 were detained in the eastern province of Zhejiang.
