Police in the central Chinese province of Hunan have shuttered an illegal online gambling enterprise that used the instant messaging service WeChat to attract punters, according to the state news agency Xinhua.
A police spokesman said that 14 arrests had been made in the operation, which was mounted after a three-month investigation, and that documentary evidence indicated that over US$1.92 million is involved.
The gambling ring started operating in January this year, and players were recruited by one of the detained persons using WeChat. Up to a hundred punters were recruited, the police claim.
