56 individuals were arrested in police raids in eastern China which have dismantled a 7.8 billion yuan ($1.1 billion) online gambling ring, the official news agency Xinhua reported Sunday.
The suspects stand accused of making illegal profits of 650 million yuan from the Philippines-based platform, which had more than 114,000 users, Xinhua said, quoting police spokesmen in the Jiangsu province.
The investigation into the gambling website actually commenced in January 2016 after a tip-off, followed up through bank card information.
The police reported that fifty of those arrested in the online gambling case were detained in Shanghai, Fujian, Zhejiang and Guangdong, Xinhua said, while another six returned to China from the Philippines and handed themselves in.
