Chinese ramp up internet controls

News on 11 Jul 2017

According to reports from the Bloomberg business news service, the Chinese government has ramped up its restrictive moves to control of the internet, directing state-operated telecomm companies to institute blocks on VPN services by February 1 2018.

The move follows a general crackdown on internet enforcement announced earlier this year by the government (see previous reports), and could impact up to 3 percent of China’s massive internet user base who use the technology to bypass restrictions (including those targeting gambling) on internet use.
