Christie keeping everyone guessing on internet gambling

New Jersey governor Chris Christie has become adept at keeping everyone guessing regarding his intentions on the intrastate legalisation of online gambling, approved strongly by both the state Assembly and Senate last year.

Despite vetoing an earlier and overwhelmingly backed bill from the legislature two years back , he has since made more encouraging and conciliatory remarks following tweaks to the re-introduced bill last year.

This week he chose to again introduce an element of doubt on his intentions, saying during an ‘Ask The Governor’ radio program Tuesday that he wasn’t certain whether legalisation would assist embattled Atlantic City casinos to recover, and expressing concerns over the potential of internet gambling to exacerbate problem gambling issues.

In short, he remains undecided with barely two weeks to go the deadline. And if he does nothing the measure will automatically become law.

The governor has already proved by his previous last-minute veto that that is unlikely to happen.
