Quick and efficient work by the investigations department of the UK National Lottery operator Camelot saved a 77-year-old English grandmother a million sterling, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Maureen Holt (77) could have been the victim of a lottery scam tried by Oldham store clerk Farakh Nizzar (30), who told her that her ticket had not won anything, then tried to claim the GBP 1 million in prize money that it really represented.
Nizzar has admitted trying to cheat the pensioner out of her massive win when she went to the store to check her lottery ticket.
Camelot investigators realised he was not the genuine winner after carrying out a series of security checks – and called in police.
The win will have a major impact on the grandmother and her husband, who is still working for a security firm at age 80.
“I just can’t believe he (Nizzar) did this, but at least he got caught,” Mrs. Holt said this week. “This money will mean my husband can finally give up work and we can enjoy our retirement.”
