The recent move by DC Comics to register several of its trademarks (The Dark Knight, Green Lantern, The Flash, Man Of Steel and Wonder Woman) in gambling and entertainment categories is being interpreted as a protective strategy by the company rather than an actual move into the gambling operational sector.
Gamblers will already be aware that the images and brands originating in comic strips and movies are already in use under licence in online slot machines, with developers using the material as the base for different and appealing game themes.
The categories under which DFC has extended its trademark registrations include:
* Entertainment services, including providing an online computer game; casino gaming; electronic casino gaming services.
* Gaming machines which accept a wager; reconfigurable casino and lottery gaming equipment, and operational computer games software sold as a unit
* Computer software and firmware for playing games of chance on any computerised platform, including dedicated gaming consoles, video based slot machines, reel based slot machines, and video lottery terminals.
* Online and in-person gambling games.
