Czech President signs gambling act into law

News on 8 Jun 2016

Czech Republic President Miloš Zeman signed the Czech Act of 26 May 2016 on Gambling into Law Tuesday.

The law will enable the Czech Finance Ministry to implement a licensing and taxation regime and allow EU operators access to the Czech online gambling market.

The measure moved quickly through the Senate having been introduced on May 26, 2016 (see previous reports) and is expected to come into effect on January 1, 2017, however, the Czech Finance Ministry said, “… some parts of the new gambling law are going to come into force on the day of its promulgation” enabling interested operators to apply for licenses after a list of test laboratories has been published.

The Ministry is planning a series of workshops from July to August 2016 which will address questions concerning the new regulations and present various aspects of the new gambling law.

“Unclear provisions of the new gambling law will be explained and specified to operators in these seminars,” a press statement said.

As seminars will be held in Czech, potential licensees are encouraged to secure the assistance of local legal advisors as translators cannot be guaranteed.

Specific topics and dates for each workshop will be published by no later than the end of June.

Written questions, which will be included in workshop agendas, are welcomed as the Gambling and Lottery Supervision Department 34 said it is unable to accept appointments with operators regarding new legislation.

These questions can be directed to Mrs. Petra Durovicova, Head of Licensing Unit of Gambling and Lottery Supervision Department via Petra.Durovicova@mfcr.cz
