Dutch market larger than previously thought?

Holland Casino-commissioned research conducted by Motivaction has revealed a Euro 500 million online gambling market, Euro 200 million more than previously estimated.

The report from Dutch publication NOS said the Motivaction research shows 1.5 million Dutch people illegally gamble online, which if accurate, equates to one in ten Dutch people over-12-years-old are active in the market of which 700,000 gamble three times a year or less and 800,000 four times or more.

Commenting on the Netherlands pending online gambling legislation, Michael Verheul of Holland Casino said: ”It all will take a very long time. There is also a social interest. You now have no protection for the online player and no visibility on issues such as addiction and money laundering through online gambling.”

Based on these figures, the proposed 20 percent tax rate on online gambling in draft legislation, would fatten the state coffers by Euro 100 million per annum.
