There must have been a few red faces at ESPN over the weekend when the company’s fantasy sports app crashed and was down for hours on the opening Sunday of the new NFL season.
The incident achieved wide social and other media coverage, with ESPN apologising to punters and attributing the debacle to a “backend data access issue,” which the company said did not impact data for teams, leagues or rosters, and did not have any privacy security implications.
The company assured media and players that it resolved the issue as quickly as possible, and is monitoring the system to ensure its continued efficient performance.
ESPN has claimed that the app serves over 7.1 million fantasy football users.
