The booming daily fantasy sports industry’s Fantasy Sports Freedom drive to achieve legal recognition is currently focused on the five US states that actively prohibit the activity as illegal gambling: Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana and Washington, and hopes to convince lawmakers that its dependence on skill rather than chance will open the way.
Funded by the Fantasy Sports Association trade body, the Freedom initiative seeks to expand legality beyond the current 38 states to embrace those which view the cash prize activity as a grey legal area, and those states which have banned it outright.
Reporting on the drive this week, Fortune magazine noted that fantasy sports fans wager over $3.6 billion annually, creating opportunities for states to garner additional tax revenues, whilst operators generate new jobs for state economies.
